Officer safety is the set of tactics
that we employ to keep us out of harms way while performing
our duties. Officers safety tactics are used during
traffic stops, arrests, building searches, field interviews,
vehicle pursuits, & foot chases. Officer
safety is an important tool that can and will keep you
safe.
A simple example of an
Officer safety tactic is that when approaching the front
door of a residence on a routine call you don't stand directly
in front of the door. You would stand to the left or
right of the door when knocking in case someone inside decides
to shoot at you though the door.
Another example is when you are
doing a slow and methodical search of a house or building for
a suspect you "slice the pie" while entering rooms or
rounding corners. Once you understand Officer safety you will
see that it can be employed on every single action
that we take during our shifts.
Some of these tactics are simple while
others are more complex. These tactics need to be
trained to the point that they are performed without
thinking about them. In this section we will provide
information & resources about this extremely
important subject matter.
